Delaware Food Stamp Program

Introduction

In the Division of Social Services, Delaware Health and Social Service operate the Food Supplement Program, which provides food assistance such as food stamps for low income individuals and families. Recipients can buy a variety of food that provides better nutrition for their families with federal funds. The funds are transmitted electronically through a Delaware Food First card, an Electronic Benefits Transfer card. The Food Supplement Program can use the card like cash anywhere that SNAP is accepted. As with other federal assistance programs, recipients must pass certain eligibility requirements to receive any funds. You can learn more about these eligibility requirements and look at a chart that gives you a general understanding of income requirements at the Food Supplemental Program website.

Applying for Food Stamps

Connecticut's program is a part of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). You can apply online for benefits through the Nutrition.gov website located here. You can apply online by first selecting the screening questionnaire. This will assess what you are eligible to apply for. Then you can select SNAP. When you apply, you need to prove your residency for Delaware, income and any other eligibility requirements, such as household size. Once you finish filling out the application, it will be sent to your local food assistance office and processed. You will receive a followup eligibility interview.

Receiving Food Stamps

Eligibility is first determined by household size, then income. If you have an income over $3,708 per month, you do not qualify for benefits. You also must prove with identification and pay stubs to ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements. You can explain more about your complications during the eligibility interview. This is specifically for families with disabled individuals. Assets are also a part of the limitations, which are determined according to the federal poverty level. You can find out more about these eligibility limits through the State of Delaware's DSS office website. Once approved, you will receive benefits electronically on a Quest card that you can use at any SNAP vendor.

Finding Food Service Locations

SNAP is the federal name for the food assistance programs. Every state has multiple SNAP locations. In fact, every county should have multiple locations where you can use your card. You can find specific locations near you using the SNAP retailer locator on the federal website. You can also call 1-800-842-1508.
