Can You Buy Groceries Online with an EBT Card?

March 7, 2012

Shopping online isn’t a new trend, but shopping for groceries online has recently become a better option for many families. In the past, online grocery stores were perfect for immobilized individuals and elder citizens who needed to have food delivered to their homes. However, there have been questions over whether you can use an EBT card from SNAPS to purchase groceries online. Since the card works like a debit at the store, it seems simple to use it online to purchase items that may be sold even cheaper.

It’s not a surprise that grocery prices are lower in certain parts of the country. The cost of milk in New York is going to be much different than it is in Florida. For that reason, online grocery stores have become incredibly popular. Recently, there has been a lot of discussion over allowing the use of food stamps to shop for online food, but so far there is no proper way to implement such an idea nor would there be a whole lot of ways to regulate a food stamp card that would allow you to purchase items online. For now, the short answer is no, you still have to use an EBT card in a physical store.

There are some technical reasons why EBT cards won’t be accepted by any online shopping services, whether or not you were able to purchase groceries by food stamp restrictions. Only credit cards or debit cards can be used for online purchases. In some cases, you may be able to check out with online accounts, like PayPal, but this is still not enabling the use of an EBT card, because it is not branded by MasterCard or Visa. You also don’t have to enter any PINs online, which is essential to purchasing with a food stamp card.

EBT sales are performed in a store and work with a point of service terminal. There are very strict limitations as to how the EBT card can be used. The PIN is the only thing that allow guarantees the person is allowed to use the benefits as the rightful owner of the card. Without a card reader and PIN input, you wouldn’t be able to even attempt to use the EBT card for an online purchase. For these reasons, there would be a lot of liability to be able to use a food stamp card for purchasing groceries online. In the future, there may be more options, but again, the implementation would require new regulations and funding.

If you are having trouble purchasing groceries at the regular super market, you may have to shop at a lower income grocery store, such as Supervalu, Aldi or Save-A-Lot, which sells food at a cheaper price and allows you to use food stamps. There are several grocery store chains that are like this and sell cheaper items, but you’ll need to look up the grocery store for your area.
